Southsea And The Mary Rose
Our four-night stay at St.Margaret's Lodge was in a very large, clean and well-decorated room. The mattress was comfortable and the bathroom facilities were adequate. Breakfast choices varied daily and the food was well presented. Perfectly sited just off a regular busroute and at night it is a very quiet street. The seafront is close and the park with boating lake was an unexpected extra. An excellent B&B for visiting the Mary Rose.

St Margaret's Lodge was in a great location. 1 min from the bus stop, which takes you to Gunwharf Quay & the historical dockyard. Or a pleasant 25 min stroll along the sea front. Our room was spacious and peaceful. Delicious breakfast. Helpful and informative host. I really enjoyed my stay.

Southsea Castle was built by Henry VIII between 1544 and 1545 to protect Portsmouth against possible French invasion. Its revolutionary design provided for the most efficient use of guns in attack or defence now that artillery dominated warfare. In the early 19th century, the castle was substantially altered to accommodate extra guns and a larger garrison of 200 men. The most significant addition of this period was an underground tunnel around the moat, which you can still enter. The castle was only withdrawn from active service in 1960. In our amazing Time Tunnel the Ghost of the Castle's first master gunner guides you through the most dramatic scenes from the castle's eventful history.

Premiership side Portsmouth were founded in 1898 by a collection of businessmen, amongst them the first chairman of the club, John Brickwood, and the man who would become known as the 'father of the club', George Oliver. It is Tinn who is credited with laying the platform for the consecutive championship winning sides of the late 1940's. Fast Fact: Peter Harris is Pompey's most successful marksman scoring 208 goals in 516 games in all competitions.
